Hesdin

HESDIN : Situated 5 minutes away from the cottage, Hesdin is a town of 300 inhabitants.(7000 altogether including the neighbouring suburbs) It was fortified by Charles Quint and was not given back to France until 1639. Note that Hesdin is the "native land" of Abbe Prevost, the author of Manon Lescaut.

Hesdin is surrounded by a green, flowery area,at the confluence of the Ternoise and Canche valleys. Old "maisons de maitre",(houses in which there was a 'master' for whom the farmers worked) which are tall and narrow, ancient cobblestones, the delightful charm of the combination of red brick with white stone… The scent of the romantic heros of the 19th Century still waft along the charming little streets. Hesdin possesses all the charm of a country town, with all the necessary facilities and amenities.

The state-owned forestland in Hesdin stretches over 1020 ha  and lies over a limestone plateau, towering above the Ternoise, Canche and Planquette valleys. By going along the 15km of forest roads, you will discover the oak and beechwood plantations and the charms of the small secluded valleys.
